Method

First we wash and clean mussel shells well and place them in a pot with enough water and boil till the shells open. Then remove the shells. clean the mussel meat, remove dirt and the black part in the bottom and rinse with water nicely.  Apply little salt and turmeric powder and keep it aside.

Heat oil in a pan and add chopped ginger and garlic saute till the raw smell goes. Then add sliced onion and saute for 2 minutes, add sliced shallots, curry leaves and green chilli stir well till onions are golden brown. Now keep flame on low and red chilli powder, turmeric powder, kashmiri chilli powder, coriander powder and pepper powder saute for 1 minute. Now add the mussels/ kalumakkaya and saute continuously till the mussels turn slightly crispy and the oil starts ooz out from the masala. this will take 8 to 10 minutes. Check salt if need add accordingly. Add few more curry leaves and saute well. Put off flame and serve with warm rice.

NB: If you don't get fresh mussels you can use frozen mussels. Enjoy cooking..
