Paripu Usili is a very popular Tamil Brahmin dish. Its a delicious side dish, crumbled lentils added with vegetables. Its commonly prepared with vegetables like banana flower, cabbage, cluster beans, french beans broad beans etc. I used french beans for this recipe. Here is simple recipe for you all to try.
Ingredients
To Grind
- Toor Dal 1/4 cup , soaked for 3 hours
- Chana Dal 1/4 cup, soaked for 3 hours
- Red Chillies 3 nos
- Asafoetida a pinch
- Curry Leaves 1 sprig
- Salt
To Saute
- Mustard Seeds 1 tsp
- Curry Leaves 1 sprig
- Dry Chilli 1 no
- French Beans / Cluster Beans 2 cups, cooked
- Turmeric Powder 2 cups
- Salt
- Oil 1 1/2 tsp
Method
Soak toor dal and chana dal for at least 3 hours. Cook french beans or cluster beans with salt as needed and turmeric powder. I used french beans here for this recipe.
Grind the soaked dal with red chilli, curry leaf, a pinch of asafoetida and salt as needed. Pressure cook for 3 whistles or steam the ground dal mix for 10 minutes. I steamed the ground dal. Once its completely cooked, it would have become a solid block. Now will have to crumble it up using hands.
If you are pressure cooking, you can pulse this in the mixer to get fluffy, please take care once the cooked dal is cools down then only to put it in the mixer grinder.
Heat a pan with oil on medium flame and splutter mustard seeds. Once the seeds crackle, add the crumbled dal mix and let it cook until the colour changes slightly. Add curry leaves and dry red chilli now and saute well.
Now add the cooked french beans or cluster beans and mix well. Check the salt , if need add accordingly. Let the flavoures mingle for 3 to 4 minutes and remove from fire and serve with warm rice. Its best to serve with moru curry or moru kuzhambu, rice, moru curry and this paripu usili super combination.
NB: If you want can add some chilli powder when you saute the dal. I heard cluster beans is good for this recipe, i didn't get that when i planned to make this so used french beans but thats also tastes good. Enjoy cooking..
