Kallumakka Fry (Mussels Fry)

Kallumakkaya fry a popular side dish from Malabar. Here is a easy recipe and my favorite item too.

  • Kallumakkaya 1/2 kg
  • Turmeric Powder 1tsp
  • Red chilli Powder 1/2 tsp
  • Black Pepper Powder 1/4 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil 


Clean the shells of mussels. Boil water and add mussels, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder and 1 tsp salt. Turn off the heat until the shells open up.

Scoop out the mussel from shell and clean by removing a fibrous hairy thing and the black part at the bottom of mussel.

Add salt to taste, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, chilli powder and pepper powder to cleaned mussels and marinate for half an hour.

Heat oil in a pan, fry the mussels until brown and crispy.

This is a very tasty side dish served with rice.
