Thalassery Fish Curry

A common fish curry in northern Kerala made with coconut, tamarind , red chilli and turmeric powder, a spicy and tangy fish curry.

  • Fish 1/2 kg ( Sardine, Mackerel or any other white fish, cut and cleaned)
  • Turmeric Powder 1/2 tsp
  • Coconut 1 1/2 cup (grated)
  • Red Chilli Powder 1 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds 1/4 tsp
  • Tamarind size of 1 lemon
  • Green chilli 3 
  • Ginger 1 piece
  • Tomatoes 1 sliced
  • Curry Leaves 3 sprigs


Grind together coconut, red chilli powder, cumin seeds and salt with enough water into a fine paste. Make a tamarind paste by adding water to it. Add green chilli, ginger and tomatoes to tamarind paste and mix well. Add coconut paste to this. Mix well. cook this paste and when it starts boiling add Cleaned fish pieces and curry leaves . Cook till the fish pieces are done and gravy becomes thick. 

If need splutter mustard seeds, add small onion and curry leaves. Stir till the onion becomes brown and pour this over the fish curry.

A perfect side dish with brown rice.
