Cabbage Thoren (Cabbage stir fry)

Its an important side dish in Kerala feast known as sadya.  Cabbage and coconut is an awesome combination. 

  • Cabbage 1 medium sized 
  • Onion 1 medium size / Shallots 4-5
  • Curry Leaves 2 sprigs
  • Ginger 1 small piece chopped
  • Mustard Seeds 1 tsp
  • Urid Dal 1 tsp
  • Green chilli 3 chopped
  • Dry red chilli 2 
  • Turmeric Powder 1/2 tsp
  • Grated coconut 1/2 cup
  • Coconut Oil 1 or 2 tbsp
  • Salt as required


Rinse the cabbage and slice thinly. Heat coconut oil in a pan or kadai. Add the mustard seed and fry them till they crackle. Add urid dal and fry them till they change color. Add ginger pieces and dry red chilli. Add the chopped onion or shallots , saute till translucent. Add the green chilli and curry leaves and saute for a minute. Now add the turmeric powder stir and fry for 3 seconds. Add the cabbage and salt. stir and saute for a minute. Cover the pan and on a low flame let the cabbage cook. Just continue to stir at times. When the cabbage is cooked, add the coconut. stir and cook for 2-3 minutes more. If there is any moisture in the pan, then cook further till all the moisture dries up. 

Serve cabbage throne hot with steamed rice or chapati.
