Bread Fruit / Kada chakka / Cheema chakka, its a tropical fruit used for cooking before ripening. This fruit looks similar to Jack fruit, it belongs to the same family. When we cook it becomes so soft. I like the texture. One of my aunt cookes the ripen fruit, she makes payasam (sweet dish) that also tastes good. Here is simple and tasty stir fry recipe for you all to try.
Bread Fruit / Kada chakka 1 medium sized cubes.
Turmeric Powder 1/4 tsp
Green Chilli 2 sliced
Salt
Red chilli powder 1 tsp
To Temper
Oil 3 tsp
Mustard Seeds 1/2 tsp
Urad Dal 1 tsp
Dry Red Chilli 2
Curry Leaves 2 sprigs
To Grind
Coconut 1/2 cup
Garlic 2 cloves
Shallots / Small Onion 3 nos
Cumin Seeds / Jeera 1/4 tsp
Method
Peel the bread fruit and remove the midrib and chop them into medium size cubes and keep inside the water, put little turmeric powder in the water and soak the bread fruit cubes in that water.
Grind the coconut, garlic, shallots and jeera as a coarse paste without adding any water.
In a pan add the cubed bread fruit, green chillies, turmeric, salt and a cup of water. cover with a lid and cook till it becomes soft . Check the availability of water inside the pan in between if it is getting dry add some more water and cook till soft.
Heat oil in another pan add the mustard seeds and urad dal. When mustard seeds starts to crackle and the urad dal starts to become golden colour add the dry red chilli and curry leaves and saute for few seconds.
Now add the cooked bread fruit , coconut mixture and red chilli powder and mix well and cook for a minute till the raw smell of garlic goes and the masala coats well.
Check for salt and add if required. Serve with warm rice.
NB: If you like the bread fruit pieces little more thinner you can cut accordingly, while cooking add water accordingly, else it over cook.
